FOR BENEFIT OF ALL

VICTORIA LEAGUE’S WORK YEAR OF SUSTAINED EFFORT Another year of useful work and of numerous activities well sustained is disclosed in the report of the Victoria League, to be presented at the annual meeting to be held on Thursday evening. The total membership now stands at 1,290, of whom 218 are life members. Twentyseven resignations were received, and 139 new members were elected. The deaths of nine members were recorded. The league had suffered a great loss in the death of the secretary, Miss Hadfield, and Miss E. M. Reid, who was a valued secretary of the Literature Committee. The report of the Ever-ready Committee states that members have experienced an exceptionally busy year. Christmas parties were given for inmates of the Knox Home, the Methodist City Mission and the girls of the Young Citizens’ League. Two bridge parties were given in aid of the Hospital Auxiliary, and were so successful that help is now given to that organisation every month. A sub-commit-tee was appointed to gather subscriptions for equipping a cot at the Children’s Hospital, and the sum of £97 was raised by a very successful concert. Daffodil Day was very successful, and many organisations benefited as a result of the distribution of the £3OO collected. Of this sum £2OO was distributed as follows:—Plunket Society, £ls; Free kindergartens, £6O; Boy Scouts’ Association, £65; Girl Guides’ Association, £10; Navy League, £10; St. John Ambulance Association, £10; Young Citizens’ Lea league donated £ls 15s to the Mayor’s unemployment relief fund. A large sum of money was raised for benevolent purposes by the sale of the cockery book compiled by members of the league, of which the fourth edition, comprising 10,000 copies, is practically -exhausted. The following donations were made:—Methodist Mission, £10; Queen Victoria Association for Maori Girls, £10; Society for the Protection of Women and Children, £5; Sister Esther’s fund, £5; Animal W'elfare Society, £5; City Mission, £5; Children’s Hospital, £l2; St. Mary’s Homes, £10; Play Association, £5; Returned Soldiers’ Association, £10; Benevolent Society, £5; Richmond Road Home, £3; parties at various institutions, £7.
