HEMP PRICES NOT GOOD

YEAR’S PRODUCTION LOWER

AUCKLAND FIGURES SATISFACTORY The prices which have been commanded for the better grades of New Zealand hemp have been barely sufficient to induce millers to produce a higher pointing fibre, and doubtless this has had a bearing on the substantial quantity of fair and common grades exported. In referring to this, the Auckland Chamber of Commerce Journal says that milling conditions at the commencement of the season had been unfavourable, but from October dry weather had prevailed, and this had, to a certain extent, enabled millers to overtake the earlier shortage. While production for the Dominion showed a slight decrease for the 12 months, it was interesting to record a fair increase in the Auckland Province. Production of tow showed a small increase, but values had declined considerably.
