SIR ARCHIE WINS THE CUP

THE Franklin Racing Club's autumn fixture opened to-day at Pukekohe in beautiful weather before a large attendance. The track was in good order and racing keen and interesting.

The Favourite Wins Brilliant Light £370 was elected as first choice for the Bombay Handicap, which Wits run in two divisions, Bombarder £351 and the CatamaranStorm Fiend bracket £316 receiving most support of the remainder. Wee Marble led from the start of the first heat from Kerry Dance, Merry Light, Brilliant Light and Gay CockadeMerry Light ran to the lead crossing the top, while the favourite improved his position and was in second berth, followed by Kerry Dance, Wee Marble, The Dansant,.Bright Comet and Gay Cockade. Merry Light and Brilliant Light turned for home at the head of Bright Comet, Wee Marble and Gay Cockade, and in a splendid finish the fa.vourite won by a long head, the third horse only d head away. Then came Gay Cockade and Hakanoa. Horse Destroyed During the preliminaries of the Bombay Handicap, Sandbag and Kerry Dance collided, the former receiving injuries which necessitated his destruction. K. Gill, rider of Sandbag, received a severe shaking.

Outsider Scores in Second Division From a straggling start Master Clements showed the way out from Bombarder, Storm Fiend and Sir Henry, blit crossing the top Vallar went to the front, with Bombarder, Storm Fiend, Sir Henry and Master Clements in close attendance. Vallar was still piloting the field at the home turn, his nearest attendants being Bombarder, Storm Fiend, Sir Henry and Balnagar. Vallar easily maintained his position to win by two lengths from Storm Fiend, with Idun, who came well at the finish, half a length away third. Won by half a length, one length between second and third. Time, 2.13. Consistent Wiltshire Quincoma £597, Uralla £544 and Wiltshire £507 were the best favoured in the Puni High-Weight Handicap. Ballachulish and Rarangi hopped out smartly, showing the way to Tago San, Uralla, Quincoma, Wiltshire and Blago. At the five-furlong post Rarangi was clear of Ballachulish, Blago, Quincoma, Uralla, Wiltshire, and Tago San (all being bunched). Rarangi dropped back before the straight was reached and Ballachulish, Uralla and Wiltshire turned for home together, with the favourite just in behind them. In the run home Wiltshire did best to win by half a length from Quincoma, with Scot Free close up third. Next to finish were Uralla (who ran about a lot in the straight), Ballachulish and Spalmore.

Favourites Fight It Out There was good speculation in the Buckland Hack Handicap, and when the machine closed Liaison was a warm favourite, carrying £1,028. Welcome Home £765 was second choice and then came Taurimu £415. Welcome Home and Liaison were the early leaders and raced together at the head of a bunch comprising Modest Boy, Catapult, Desert Knight, Wyoming, and Appellant. Down the back the two favourites were still in the van, their nearest attendants being Wyoming, Dress Circle, Appellant, Modest Boy and Palmares. Liaison and Welcome Home turned for home together, with Palmares, Wyoming and Restaurant at the head of the others. In a good race to the judge. Liaison did best to win by half a length from Welcome Home, with Restaurant a good third. Then came Abbey Queen, Modest Boy, Palmares, Wyoming and Always.
