TAUMARUNUI BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL At the last meeting of the Tauniarunui Borough Council the .Department of Labour advised that the fixing of Wednesday as the statutory lialfholiday in the borough was illegal, as there had not been a conference of the constituent bodies in the combined area to deal with the matter, and the Minister was himself fixing the halfholiday as Wednesday. The Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson. said the s'lanunui Town Board was the other local body, and there had not been a conference. A further letter from Che stationmaster, Mr. E. Guthrie, at Taumarunui, regarding the charges made for lighting the Railway social hall, insisted that the lighting for this building should be at the same rate as fer other railway uses of electricity. Crs. S. R. Dryland and C. Boles were appointed as the council’s representative on the executive of the Municipal Bo’-c' Band. The District Engineer cf the Public Works Department, Mr. P. Keller, notified that in connection with the additional cost of constructing the new Ongarue Bridge the Main Highways Board had agreed to subsidise the extra expense at £2 for £3. The Mayor stated that the council’s share would now be £393 i>s 8d of tiie excess, and it was decided that Cr. G. F. Thompson, who is the counc s’s representative to the Municipal Conference, should interview the Minister and endeavour to have a further adjustment made.
