Hoover, has predicted that the Mississippi Valley will have recovered sufficiently from the flood disaster to produce a full cotton crop this year.— A. and N.Z. “The greatest peace-time calamity in the history of the United States,” was how Senator Hoover described the Mississippi floods, which occurred in April and May last year. Within a week of the beginning of the flood, 75 people were reported dead. 30,000 homeless, and damage, estimated at £5,000,000, to have been done. By the end of May,, when the floods began to subside, 500.000 people were homeless and £4,400,000 had been spent on relief work. The total losses have never been accurately estimated, but they are thought to have exceeded £10,000,000.
