Gunmen Shoot While Church-People Pray
GANG LEADER WOUNDED “WARFARE” IN CHICAGO By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.15 a.m. CHICAGO, Thursday. Despite the fact that 100,000 citizens assembled last night at special church services to pray “that this city may be purged of vice and corruption,” gunmen are continuing their warfare. Three men armed with a revolver and a machine gun seriously wounded Jack McGurn, chief lieutenant of one of the gangs near the flower shop where the assassination of Dean Obanion began a long list of deaths three years ago. The shooting occurred in a gambling resort. One bystander was wounded. The killers escaped. McGurn refuses to talk more than to demand that a lawyer be brought to him. It is feared that McGurn’s wounds mav be fatal.— A. and N.Z.
