RELIEVING DISTRESS

BRITISH LEGION ACTIVE BENEFIT MATINEE An effort is to be made by the British Legion to establish a fund in New Zealand for the assistance of incapacitated Imperial ex-servicemen, who, for various reasons, are not receiving pensions. Some of these men in residence in the Auckland Province are experiencing acute distress, and, although they have already received assistance from the Returned Soldiers’ Association and local benevolent funds, such relief is merely temporary. Although the ramifications of the Legion are wide, it is unable to spend all its capital in relief, and whatever assistance is given to the distressed men in New Zealand must be the result of local efforts.

Realising this, Mr. H. Hayward, the managing director of Fuller-Hayward Theatres, has generously promised the full proceeds of a matinee of the picture, “Sorrell and Son,” one day next week. Mr. Hayward has promised Captain Humphreys-Davies, representative of the British Legion in New Zealand, that the whole of the FullerHayward organisation will be placed at his disposal. At the matinee an address will be given by Lieutenant-Colonel E. 11. Northcroft, D-S.O.

Mr. E. j. F. Kennedy, public accountant, has offered to act as honorary treasurer for the proposed fund, and will acknowledge any donations that may be sent to him at his offices in the Southern Cross Buildings.
