Footballers’ Hall Could Be Banned
RESULT OF EUCHRE FINE "ABSURDITY OF THE LAW” (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. Claiming to have discovered an inptance of absurdity in the possibilities cf the law. a Christchurch solicitor to<iay discussed the conviction of William Alfred Britten, who was compelled to pav £l3. the amount of Supreme Court cos is as a result of the decision of Mr. Justice Adams, which held that euchre was illegal. Illustrating the absurdity of the law, he said. “It would now be possible for the police if they applied for and obtained the declaration of the Supreme Court to close up the Sydenham Football Club’s hall and they would also have the power of arresting anyone found on the premises. The hall could not even be used for football purposes. It is not at all likely that the police will do this.” he said, “but there is the opportunity, which goes to show what a funny thing the law can be. “The hall could not be banned now, as though it were a plague spot.”
