NEW REGENT
DIX IN “SHANGHAI BOUND” “Shanghai Bound,” featuring Richard. Dix and Mary Brian, which has been drawing crowded houses to the New Regent throughout the week, will be screened for the last time to-mor-row. Richard Dix has landed and reports the situation well in hand. Down the Yangtse River in a dirty Chinese river boat, Dix comes with a cargo of American refugees fleeing from liunger-mad pirates. And he brings his boat to safety, too, but only after one of the most thrilling fights seen on local screens this year. The supporting cast is exceptionally good. Mary Brian, who played in two of Dix’s recent pictures, is again the leading woman in this one. As an American society girl, she has one of the best roles of her career. Other players are well cast, including the 150 Chinese who are seen in the atmospheric scenes. This dramatic picture is preceded each evening by an elaborately-staged prologue, featuring Dorothy Woolley and Cecil Hall’s prize ballet. An item of outstanding interest on the pictorial programme is an excellent English production depicting the story and origin of the\beautiful old English ballad, “The Mistletoe Bough.” An interesting Regent Gazette and a delightful scenic of Portland, the oldest settlement in Victoria are also items on this star programme. Musical, as always, the current programme at the Regent is of a very high standard. Leslie Harvey receives enthusiastic applause for Schubert’s “Serenade,” and Hill’s “Aloha,” while the Regent Operatic Orchestra renders an excellent musical score.
