Dutchmen to Dare Stormy Atlantic in 24-foot Boat
By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Reed 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. Dutchmen are starting next week to cross the Atlantic in a 24ft. boat, which is declared to be unsinkable. They have arrived at Westminster Pier after a three-day crossing from Rotterdam. The crew includes a 68-year-old inventor, Mr. J. P. Schuttevaer, who says that the boat cannot be capsized because the water tank runs the full length of the keel, and the craft automatically rights itself. It rises with the waves, hence the water cannot break over it. The motive power is from sails, with four emergency oars. The voyagers have a tiny motor for charging the accumulators of the wireless set with which they hope to keep in touch with civilisation. The voyage is expected to take 46 days. Three tons of provisions and water are stowed in the tiny cabin, which serves the purpose of dormitory, store room, wireless room and living room. No cooking is to be done during the voyage, all the meals consisting of bully beef, tea and damper.—A. and N.Z. L rK ?r
