HELPING THE SICK
HOSPITAL AUXILIARY REPORT Though only recentiy put on a sound footing, the Hospital Auxiliary has already become a body of considerable importance so far as the sick and needy of the Auckland Hospital is concerned. Since opening the depot in the hospital grounds about 2,000 garments, numbers of boots and shoes, much foodstuff, fruit and vegetables have been received at the depot, and over 1,700 garments, many boots and shoes, and all foodstuffs have been given out to needy patients and their dependants. February was a very busy month; 237 garments, 18 pairs of shoes, 48 pots of jam, bags of fruit, biscuits, cakes and sweets have been received, and 334 garments, 33 pairs of shoes and all foodstuffs have been distributed. A machine is now installed in the depot and numbers of garments have been re-made for children. Many needy mothers have been helped to clothe their children for school. Ways and means of keeping the depot stocked were discussed at a meeting of the Depot Committee, for children’s' and men’s clothing is urgently needed. The Ever Ready League gives a monthly gift of £1 in goods, and the Mount Eden branch pays a months visit, bringing quantities of clothing and food, which are all greatly appreciated. Some members reported that they appreciate the permission given to visit the wards between the hours of 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Some take gifts to j the patients of cut grapes and other fruits and pots of jam; some magazines, and others flowers and sweets, besides garments needed for patients or for the use of the wards.
