SEVERAL GRASS FIRES

HOUSES THREATENED Six grass fires in suburban districts yesterday threatened a number > houses before they were extinguished. The largest of these was at O’Rorke Road, Penrose, w r here the fire swept through over 20 acres of scrub. Here three houses were threatened. The One Tree Hill brigade fought the flames for an hour and a-half before they were extinguished. The same brigade was later called out to a fire in Pilia Road, where two houses were in danger. A fire in the grass beside the railway line at the Mount Eden station, near the Dominion Road footbridge, scorched a house near by before the Mount Eden brigade could get the flames under control. The Onehunga brigade put out a small fire in Rawhiti Road about 2.30 yesterday afternoon. Two calls were received by the Takapuna brigade yesterday, one to Napier Avenue and the other to Pupuke Road. No damage was done in either case.
