NATIVE WOMAN ASSAULTED
DAMAGES AWARDED TE KUTTI, Wednesday. In the Te Kuiti Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon, before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., a native woman, Amakoura Hohepa, claimed from Rangirumaki Hori and Tera Tuheka, the sum of £25 general damages and £3 10s special damages for assault on December 1 last. Mr. E. M. Mackersey, for plaintiff, said she was lying ill in bed when defendants entered her house and accused her of the theft of a gold locket and some crochet work. These articles were the lawful property of plaintiff. When ordered to leave the house defendants had brutally attacked her, despite the fact that she was suffering from pleurisy and was defenceless. Dr. Graham gave evidence regarding the nature of the head injuries inflicted, which were consistent with the plaintiff’s story of the assault. After hearing further evidence, his Worship gave judgment for plaintiff for £5 and costs, and afterwards lectured the parties in the case and exhorted them to refrain from unnecessary quarrelling and bickering.
