BROKE ALL BUT HIS HEART

Tom Pickernell, the celebrated gentleman rider, who passed his early years in Tasmania, but earned enduring renown in England by success in the Grand National Steeplechase, kept a record of the accidents that befell him while riding. At the age of 15 years he broke his right thigh, and the injured limb was always shorter than the other. At various times he broke both wrists, his .collar-bone, and his elbow, dislocated his shoulder, severely sprained his ankle, injured his back, and was rendered unconscious about 12 times. To wind up his career, he had his jaw broken in three places, lost the sight of an eye, injured that of the other, and lay unconscious for five davs. This was at Sandpwn Park (England) in 1577, when six or seven horses galloped over him. When the doctors had patched him up he handed in his licence.
