MUST NOT GLARE

PLAYERS AND LINESMEN IF LOOKS COULD SLAY The annual meeting of the United States Lawn Tennis Association was called upon to vote on the following "committee recommendation”: Tennis Umpires Committee (W); A motion to be offered at the annual meeting of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, asking the players

to refrain from glaring at a linesman, who, in their opinion has made a wrong decision. The English Lawn Tennis Association has a much more drastic rule than this. Tournament regulation 15 contains this sentence: The decision of an umpire shall be final upon every question of fact, and any competitor expressing disapproval of it, either by word or action, will render himself liable to be disqualified. SUBURBAN SNAPSHOTS COMPETITIONS CONTINUED The fifth round of the outer suburban inter-club competitions was played on Saturday, but, as some of the courts were unfit for play owing to the rain on the previous night and the Saturday morning, the Clevedon v. Papakura A and B grade matches were postponed till nex,t Saturday, and the

Mangere Central v. Papatoetoe A grade until March 10. Of the A grade matches played, Mangere East v. Valley, at Valley, was the closest contest. The teams ended up five matches all, and in sets the home team claimed the honours by 14 — 13. East Tamaki maintained their improved form by registering its second victory of the competitions in succession, defeating Manurewa on its own courts. Manurewa now fills the bottom position with one win and four losses. In the B grade Papatoetoe accounted for Mangere Central on the latter’s courts. Valley defeated Mangere East at Mangere. and is now level with Papa-

kura for the honours, four wins each, while the latter team has one more match to play. East Tamaki registered its first win for the season by defeating Manurewa by 9 —5. Special interest will be maintained when the postponed matches are played, as three of the teams concerned are running level for first place, with four wins and one loss each. As the next round, due to be played on March 10, clashes with the East Tamaki amateur sports, permission has been granted for the East Tamaki v. Papatoetoe match to be played on March 3, and on the improved form being shown by the former team, Papatoetoe will have to look to its laurels.
