500 Killed in Battle With Italians By Cable. —Press Associatioyi. — Copyright. Reed. 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. THE Rome correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says that following a series of strenuous operations the Italian colonial troops have extended their occupation of Cyrenaica to the edge of the Libyan Desert. They are permanently garrisoned, in two cases, controlling caravan routes. Well-armed Arabs defended Tegrift to the last gasp, and elsewhere 1,000 horsemen resisted the Italians for several hours, leaving 300 killed on the field. Their total killed numbered 500. Many prisoners and much booty was captured. The Italian casualties were 2:10 killed and wounded.—Sun. Cyrenaica, an extensive province of Libya, in Northern Africa, lies in a south-easterly direction from Italy. Cyrene, the ancient capital, the ruins of which are to be found a few miles from the Mediterranean Coast, was founded by the Greeks in the seventh century, B.C. The Libyan Desert separates Cyrenaica from Egypt.
