OLYMPIC COUNCIL

QUESTION OF NOMINATIONS SHORTAGE OF FUNDS Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. A meeting of the New Zealand Olympic Council was held this evening. It was stated that during the past week £123 11s 4d, including £IOO given by Sir Douglas McLean, has been received toward the Olympic fund. The New Zealand’Rowing Association had arranged to hold a meeting of rowing men in Wanganui on Friday, during the New Zealand championships, to forward the appeal in rowing circles. An important question was raised at the meeting by the chairman, Mr. J. W. Heenan. He said people are asking when the Olympic team was going to be selected. If the money were available, the team was already selected. The council had received from the several associations four nominations of swimmers, two of boxers, two of athletes (there were three, but R. A. Rose had retired), and a rowing crew of ten men, a cox and a trainer. All these would go if funds were available. “The real question at issue in the event of funds not being available is who is to go,” said Mr. Heenan. “There is only one thing to do, and that is to call a conference of representatives of the National Association together, with one or two members of the council, to come to some arrangement as to the order of merit of the whole team. The New Zealand Swimming Association says that Miss Stockley should come before Miss Miller, but we know nothing as to whether the Swimming Association should come before Miss Miller or the rowing section. This is a matter to be settled by agreement, if possible, but failing that by the Olympic Council.” A conference consisting of one representative of each national association, with Mr. H. Amos and Mr. J. W. Heenan, of the Olympic Council, is to meet next Tuesday to consider the question. The Boxing Association has already provided enough money for its two nominations.
