U.S. NAVY PROGRAMME
PRESIDENT DISPLEASED WILL NOT VETO BILL By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright* WASHINGTON, Saturday. It is understood that the President, Mr. Coolidge, does not believe the 16ships programme drawn up by the Naval Committee of the House of Representatives will provide sufficient vessels for adequate national defence. He still insists that it would have been better to have adopted the 71vessels programme. Mr. Coolidge thinks there should be no time limit on construction, and that the vessels should be built as the financial situation warrants it. He contends that the time limit in the proposed Bill would not be binding on another Congress which might desire to repeal it and could do so. It is not likely, however, that the President will veto the measure, particularly as it is indicated that the various leaders in the House of Representatives will support the committee’s programme.—A. and N.Z.
