£1,430 FOR ONE DAY’S RACING

ON OFFER AT WHANGAREI AUTUMN MEETING PROGRAMME Popular fixtures with Auckland owners and trainers are the autumn and spring meetings held by the Whangarei Racing Club. The success of the gathering last spring is reflected ’ in the autumn programme, which, judging by the attractive stake-money provided, appears certain to attract a number of horses from headquarters for chis one-day fixture. Saturday, March 31, is the date. The total value of the stake-money is 1,400, and included in this is a gold cup valued at £3O. When taking into consideration that the meeting extends to only one day the stakes offered will be fully appreciated. Most interest will, of course, centre in the mile and three furlongs event, the Mclnnes Memorial Handicap, and as the winner will receive £2lO in addition to the gold cup, the club deserves to meet with a good response from owners and trainers. The minor place money is £6O and £3O. Then there is the main sprint, the Stewards’ Handicap, £195 to the horse that triumphs, and £4O and £ls for the two that fill the second and third places. No doubt some nice sprinters will contest this six-furlong bout. Attention will then be transferred to the mile race, the Waipu Handicap, of £l5O, and as the last race is often referred to as the “recovery stakes” a good field should be seen in action. Hurdlers are catered for, and as the Northland Hurdles Handicap is an open race, of the value of £2OO, it should not detract from the merit of the programme. The hack performers are also well catered for, and the two races carded for them—the Portland and the Maungatapere Handicaps—of a similar value, £135, five and six furlongs respectively, should fill well. The Settlers’ Handicap, of £l2O, seven furlongs, is restricted to horses trained within the district, while the opening event, the Trial Handicap, is a maiden race worth £llO, and is run over six furlongs. Summed up, the meeting is well worth consideration at the hands of owners, and a most successful gathering is expected. Nominations for all events will close with the secretarj-, Mr. F. W. Webster, P.O. Box 79, Whangarei, or with Messrs. Blomfield and Company, High Street, Auckland, on Friday, March 9, at 5 p.m. Handicaps will appear on or about March 20, with the acceptances closing on March 23.
