SPLENDID SPORT AT WOODVILLE

TRAINER GEORGE NEW PERFORMS RARE FEAT TAKING FOUR WINS (Special to THE SUE) PALMERSTON N.. Friday. I'he Awapuni trainer, George New, performed a rare feat at Woodville to-day, when he led in the winners of half the races on the programme, three of his four successes being in successive races. Light rain fell during the day, and as some had fallen overnight, the surface of the course was a trifle soft. The machine handled £13,170, as against £13,394 a year ago, a decrease of £224. David Garrick won the Cup after a great struggle with Oratrix, and Broad Acre succeeded easily in the Ruahine Handicap. Favourite Well Beaten All six acceptors in the Oringi Hurdles Handicap went to the p Jst, s. small betting pool finding Polyphemus (£385) preferred to Blue Peter (£236) and Panorama (£141). The field went away in good lftie, Axle and Polyphemus being the first to show clear, with Blue Peter next. They raced in that order through the straight and into the back, where Polyphemus joined Axle, and Panorama, who had been tailing the field, worked in behind Blue Peter. Five furlongs from home Axle dropped back, A Blue Peter and Panorama running up to the favourite, and they turned for home on close terms. Blue Peter came J through on the rails, while Panorama * came up on the outside, and, landing 1 first over the last fence, went on to win by three lengths from Blue Peter, - with the favourite —who had tired over 1 [ the last furlong—in third berth four j lengths back. There was a further 1 s interval to Axle and Ponjola.

Shining Star at Last Golden Egg and Tragic were the sole defections from the Maiden, leaving the good field of 14 runners to go to the post, Sneerer (£336) being elected favourite from Shining Star (£245), and Molong (£150), with another Awapuni candidate in Red Bank (£135) next in demand. Keen was smartest to begin from Vindication, Shining Star, and Molong, the field early commencing to string out, the favourite being well back. Landed into the straight, Shining Star was taken to the front, and hanging on gamely, managed to retain his advantage to win by a good half-length from Indication, noses and head separating Molong and Ahalama from Vindication. Then came Red Bank, Skyrider, and Timi lnihi. Shining Star has run consistently this season, but had never previously managed to improve on second placings. A Fighting Finish Bennanee and Ring Boy failed to fulfil their engagements in the Woodville Cup, thereby leaving 11 runners to contest the honours. A good betting pool saw Joy Bird (£336) wind up favourite from the Nolan Cup winner, Blimp (£311), with good support for Lady Limond (£283) and Oratrix (£267). With the rise of the barrier, a race for position ensued, Blimp being the actual leader from Lady Limond, Twink, Capitulation, Huikai, and Joy Bird as they passed the stand, Black Mint being whipper in. There was little change among the leading division right to the halfmile post, where Capitulation and Blimp were on terms with Lady Limond and Twink, together in front of Joy Bird and David Garrick, and Huikai ahead of Oratrix. Crossing the top, Capitulation went to the front, and was first to straighten out for home from Joy Bird, David Garrick, Oratrix, Black Mint, and Blimp. At the distance David Garrick came through on the rails, to join Oratrix, with Novar also lodging a challenge. The leading pair, however, outdistanced the field, and in a fighting finish up the straight David Garrick annexed the honours by a neck, with Novar in third berth four lengths back, the Sarto gelding being clear of Joy Bird, Cohesion, Lady Limond, and Blimp. Aston Wins Well The original field of 14 runners in tho County Handicap was reduced to 10 by the defection of Grand National, Tanagra, Rameses, and Le Champ. Vigilance (£326) was promoted to the post of favourite from Moa Bird (£323), there being a drop to Far Money (£242), and Lady Cynthia (£230). When the tapes lifted Aston, who was making his first appearance since winning on the second day of the club’s summer fixture, went to the front from Dreamy, Hine Hohoro, Little Queen, and Vigilance, Moa Bird and Handsome having been slow to move. Aston strode along in the van right to the straight, Dreamy and Iline Hohoro being ahead the bunch. Inside the distance Lady Cynthia and Little Queen put in an appearance and the former, who ran somewhat of an erratic course in the straight, got to within a neck of Aston before the post was reached, with a gap of two lengths to Little Queen, who headed off Vigilance. The winner put up an attractive performance, and was never seriously troubled till nearing the finish, when he was stopping badly. A Comfortable Ride Crown Area, Dobbin, Birkie, and Lady Ideal were withdrawn from the Ruahine Handicap, the open sprint for the day, but despite the absence of the first-named the public elected his stable companion, Broad Acre (£544), favourite, with Royal Ceres (£445) and Epistle (£321) preferred to Arrow Lad (£308). Royal Ceres was actually first out from Arrow Lad and Broad Acre, but when the field had settled down Miss Pat was showing } the way to Broad Acre, Arrow Lad, 1 Royal Ceres, and Epistle. Crossing » the top Broad Acre assumed command, . to lead into the straight from Epistle, i Royal Ceres, and Arrow Lad. The ; leader was never troubled to win com- . fortably by three lengths from Arrow : Lad, who got up to take second honj ours by a length and a-half from , Royal Ceres, with Coot, Miss Pat, and l Epistle next to finish. r Mooregas Finishes Well The defection of Tea Miss from the Sapling Stakes robbed the event of : some of its interest, and in the absence i of the Tea Tray filly Amplifier (£667) i was installed favourite from Australis j (£266), with Mooregas (£260) rank- ■ ing third in demand. The more ext perienced Mooregas, Millais, and AmL plifier showed the way to Australis out ’ of the barrier, some of the youngsters s being slow to move, and with a fur- ; long and a-half gone the field had i spread out considerably. At the en- > trance Amplifier ran up to Millais, i to show the way into the straight from Mooregas and Australis, with a gap l to Boston. The issue promised to be fought out by Amplifier and Millais, until Mooregas came with a sustained run to overhaul the favourite, and go : on to win by two lengths, with Millais J a similar distance back. Australis » was fourth, with Boston, Spearman, ' High Society, and Tonbridge at long ’ intervals. r G. New’s Hat Trick l Fourteen runners went to the post i in the President’s Handicap, Bon- : homme, Broad Acre, Ring Boy, Phan- * tasy, and Lady Gay having declined 5 their engagements. A good betting ■ race saw Duke Abbey (£556) installed - a firm favourite. from The Swell . £395), with Wilderness (£174) and L Cosmetic (£173), within a pound of . one another in th<e betting market.

From a beautiful dispatch Willow Wai, f Cosmetic, and Royal Game raced on j terms for the first furlong - , with Lin ; Arlington, Tresham, The Sweli, and j Duke Abbey next in attendance. Ap- ; proaching the half-mile post. Willow ; Wai was showing the way to Cosmetic, Royal Game, Duke Abbey, Tresham, and Kilmoyler, the favourite being well placed on the rails. Willow Wai was still in the van at the entrance from Royal Game, "Kilmoyler, and Cosmetic, with Duke Abbey in behind. When asked the question, Duke Abbey ran up to the front, to stride in a comfortable winner by a length from The Swell, who finished strongly, to take second honours from Kilmoyler. with Cosmetic, Kilmiss, Willow Wai. and Tresham next to finish. A Great Finish Talisker was a better favourite than Red Fuchsia, for the Victoria Handicap, which, though a live-liorse race, ended in the best finish of the day. Talisker went to the front leaving the straight the first time, and led along the back from Fallow, while Grand National was last. The latter moved forward crossing the top, and soon after turning for home headed Talisker, while Aurora Borealis also ran into line. Talisker looked to be beaten, but he came again at the finish, and won by a nose from Red Fuchsia, with Aurora Borealis another head away. Braeman was fourth, and Fallow last. Concluding results: PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £150; 7 fur. 1— DUKE ABBEY, 9.6, A. E. Ellis 1 2 THE SWELL, 8.6, R. Reed .... 2 S—KILMOYLER, 7.12, T.
