YOUNG MAN’S SUICIDE
TAKES POISONOUS TABLETS AFRAID OF GOING BLIND (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. | A verdict of suicide by poisoning was ! returned by the cororer, Mr. Wyvern I Wilson, S.M., at Hamilton yesterday when an inquest was held concerning i the death of Bertram Martin, single, aged 20. Dr. Thomas Thorpe, of the Waikato i Hospital, stated that deceased was | admitted at 2 a.m. on February 23. He told witness that he was very dej pressed and thought he was going blind. He took five or six tableteach containing 2.03 grains of poison. One of the tablets would have b»en sufficient to have fatal results. The pathological effect was the setting up ;of an internal corrosive action. An emetic, was used to produce vomiting and ai\ antidote administered inmediately. Everything possible was ! done for deceased, but he died at 9 or 10 p.m. the same day. Constable Caseldine stated that he j saw deceased shortly after his admi?I sion to the hospital Martin told him he had been very depressed, and ad mitted having taken the tablets. Evidence was given by deceased s father, Albert Henry Martin, of Hunt West. He received a letter that morning from his son. setting out his reas ons for taking his life.
