GREYMOUTH JUBILEE
SIXTIETH ANNIVERSARY A WEEK’S FESTIVAL To-day marks the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the Grey district and its chief town, Greymouth, on the west coast of the South Island. To celebrate the diamond jubilee of the district, the residents of the county, who have the reputation of being the most hospitable people in the Dominion, have organised a week’s festival to which they have invited representatives of every county and borough in New Zealand. The week’s programme starts to-day with. the Jubilee Meeting of the Grey Trotting Club. The main items in the programme are the welcome to his Excellency the Governor-General on Tuesday, and the holding of the New Zealand Cycle and Athletic Chajnpionship Meeting on Thursday. A weekly paper, “The Jubilee Journal,’’ which deals largely with the early history of Grey district and town and the development of the famous coal and gold mining industries, has been published by the Jubilee Committee for three months. Numbers of visitors, including the Prime Minister, Mr. Coates, and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. H. B. Holland, have assembled in Greymouth.
