VISIT TO TE AROHA A special excursion train conveyed nearly 500 children and adults to Te Aroha on Wednesday for the annual districts school outing. On arrival at Te Aroha, the Mayor, Mr. R. Coulter, extended a very hearty welcome to the visitors. A cricket match between Te Awamutu and Te Aroha High School teams resulted in a win for Te Aa'oha School Dy 15 runs.. NORTH KAIPARA SHOW The North Kaipara Agricultural Societys’ annual show was continued yesterday in fine weather. There were good entries of horses, especially in the lOst. hack classes. Mrs. J. G. Mills won in the champion harness and champion pony classes, and Mr. E. O. Evans showed the champion hunter. In the cattle sections Herefords, Polled Angus, Jerseys and Friesians were well represented. Sheep entries were poor as to numbers, but there were a few fine Romneys on show, as well as some good quality fat ewes. PRESBYTERIAN HALL DEDICATED AT MANUREWA The official opening and dedication of the new Manurewa Presbyterian Church hall was celebrated on Wednesday evening, when there was an attendance of over 200 members and friends of the church present. Mr. Crombie gave a short address, and congratulated the congregation on attaining their desire in the erection of the new hall, and wished them every success in the future. He then turned the key and declared the hall open for the work of God. The members of the Presbytery entered the hall, followed by the members of the session, after which the congregation took their places. The order of the service was as follows: Scripture lessons, read by the Rev. T. Halliday, Moderator of the Presbytery; Prayer of Invocation, by the Rev. W. J. Gow; Scripture reading by the Moderator; Apostles’ Creed, the Moderator, and repeated by the congregation; dedication of the church hall, the Rev. T. H. Roseveare; Prayer of Dedication, the Rev. T. H. Roseveare, Moderator of the district. A stirring sermon was preached by the Rev. Fraser B. Barton, 8.A., who took for his text, “The glory of the Lord filled the house.” The Rev. R. R. Greenwood pronounced the Benediction. OTAHUHU BOROUGH ONLY URGENT WORK The Otahuhu Borough Council met yesterday evening, the Mayor, Mr. R. B. Todd, presiding. The foreman reported that 10 men were at present employed on outside work in the borough, and only urgent maintenance work was in hand. An application was made by Catherine Horan for remission of her water rate owing to a leak in the pipes. The council disclaimed all responsibility, as the leak was inside her boundary, and insisted on payment amounting to £1 18s 9d. The Papatoetoe Town Board expressed appreciation of the council’s action in allowing the fire brigade to proceed to Papatoetoe and endorsed a cheque for £lO 10s to be donated to the members of the brigade. The foreman was instructed to report on the application of B. A. Stannton for permission to turn the stormwater from his property into the borough’s drainage system. An application by L. Hubbard for the clearing of the drain fronting his property was referred to the foreman to report to the next meeting. The engineer reported issuing instructions for the installation of Buchan traps in the Hokonui drainage area to relieve complaints regarding sewer gas. A total of 4,169,000 gallons of waiter was pumped during the past fourteen days. It was decided, as a deterrent, to prosecute a recent offender for the lighting of a fire in the borough area, necessitating the calling out of the brigade. The question of the fire brigade attending fires outside the prescribed area was fully discussed, and it was eventually decided that only under speical circumstances would permission be granted. The question of the supplying of water to the Mount Wellington Road Board and Papatoetoe Town Board was brought up by Cr. Pearce. The clerk explained that under the deed of delegation it was compulsory to supply the Mount Wellington area, the price, also being fixed. Papatoetoe Town Board was buying water for their district from the Manukau County Council, which was a customer of the Otahuhu Borough Council, and in that case Papatoetoe was not dealing with Otahuhu. On the motion of Cr. Wills it was decided that a complaint be made to the postmaster regarding the nonclearance of letter boxes in the borough area.
