HOW COURTS KEPT GREEN REMUERA CLUB FINED Four of the Remuera Tennis Club’s grass courts have kept their verdancy despite the water short- ! age. How, was told at the Police Court to day. The club pleaded guilty to charges of using a hose, and failing to hold a hose in hand. Mr. Mac Kay said that the beautiful condition of the grass courts had attracted the attention of a city council inspector, who called on the caretaker and gave him warning. “The caretaker was cheeky,” said Mr. McKay, “so two inspectors hid behind a hedge, and saw the caretaker fill a roller with water. He used the roller on the courts.” “Then he became bolder, and left a hose running with a sack over it.” Mr. Hore, who appeared for defendants, said that the caretaker had been instructed not to use a hose. Tho club had allowed eight of its 12 courts to go to ruin on account cf the water shortage, but it was admitted that the other four had been maintained by the roller. “The club’s water supply was cut off a fortnight ago,” said Mr. Hore, » “and it is still off.” I A fine of 20s with costs was imposed.
