OVERCROWDED SCHOOL
MAUNGAWHAU’S POSITION The overcrowding of the Maungawhau School has caused some concern among the parents in the district, and the committee has been approached for relief. A deputation which stated the parents’ case deplored the confining of pupils in the basement as anything but conducive to good health. It was decided that Mr. W. G. Lange, chairman of the committee, and Mr. Charles Wilson, the headmaster, should wait on the Education Board to explain the position. The view of the chairman of the Education Board, Mr. A. Burns, is that there is ample room in the new Normal School and in Mount Eden School for any excess of pupils at Maungawhau, while at the present time an application for a grant is before the department for a new school at the corner of Mount Albert and Dominion Roads. There were 807 children at the Maungawhau School, he said, and it was not the policy of the board to encourage large schools. He could not see how any additional buildings could be provided.
