BIG AREA DESTROYED DAMAGE NEAR PAHIATUA Press Association. PAHIATUA, To-day. Bush and scrub fires have started in the Puketoi Ranges and have spread to the Makuri-Coonoor district. They swept over a wide stretch of country. Losses of stock are reported to have been suffered by D. McCarthy and Hansen Bros. The Makuri scenic reserve wa? also swept by fire as well as Hansen’s plantation. Fire went over a portion of the properties of Mr. Ryan. H. Dillon, R. B. Robertson, and T. Russell. There have been some very narrow escapes of dwellings and farm buildings. T. Ross, of Coonoor. had a firefighting party out all night, round his woolshed, until it was saved. Mr. Rhodes’s house was also in danger.
