ON TWO WHEELS

NEWS AND NOTES A- complete circuit o£ the whole of the >» orth Island has recently been made by an Auckland motor-cyclist, Mr. L. A. Miller, who with Mr. W. Elmsby in the sidecar, has travelled 1,900 miles since January 28. The first lap was of 536 miles round Morth Auckland, performed as a competitor in the recent Sports Club Reliability Trial. With only three or four days’ interval, the two enthusiasts set out again on a holiday tour for a fortnight. The route lay through Te Kuiti. New Plymouth, Wanganui, Wellington, Napier, Gisborne, over the Motu, Opotiki, Tauranga, Auckland. With a few side trips such as a visit to Lake Waikaremoana, this trip measured out to 1,364 miles. The machine used was a Norton and sidecar, and the petrol consumption averaged 55 m.p.g.—a remarkable performance. As a cheap holiday a motor-cycle trip is unrivalled, for Millar and Llmsby calculate their total expenses for a 14-day tour, inclusive of hotels, benzine, lunches, etc., at £ll each. The Christchurch Motor-Cycle Club (known as the Pioneer Club) is arranging a 24-hours’ reliability trial to Dunedin and back. HEALTHY MOTOR-CYCLING Probably one of the finest tributes paid to motor-cycling as a healthier was when Dr. D. J. Donovan, chief surgeon of the New York Police Department, after a survey of the entire department, selected' the Blood Transfusion Unit from the men of the Motor-Cycle Division. This unit was deemed necessary in order to provide fresh, clean blood for men in the service who are shot down or otherwise injured.

The excellence of the physique and i exceptional quality of the blood of the members of the motor-cycle squad so far outclassed all others that the necessary number of men for the unit were selected from the “Rider Ranks.” The New York police have used motorcycles for over 15 years and have at present 655 machines in this department.
