To-day’s Turf

AT ELLERSLIE THIS MORNING’S GALLOPS TWO-YEAR-OLDS SHAPE WELL I Racing interest will centre upon Te ! Aroha during the week-end. and I number of Ellerslie candidates who ; claim engagements at this meeting were allotted tasks over a few furlongs at headquarters this morning. Unless otherwise mentioned, all the ! fast work was recorded on the course i proper, outside of two trestles. On the No. 2 grass Nassock was not bustled to travel over a round in 1.50 I 2-5. , Bombarder, who has not shown the i form expected of him earlier in the ; season, had a slight advantage over 1 Pompeius at the end of five furlongs, run in 1.5 4-5. , Speechless has shown a little form i lately, and her* effort over seven furlongs in 1.33 4-5 was fair. She will be meeting some fair hacks in the Hack Cup at Te Aroha on Saturday, and as she can muster up a fair amount of pace should give a good account of himself.

White Light and Prince Papa, who have not been asked to do anything serious as yet, were restricted to a sprint down the straight. Probably the best effort of the morning was that in which the stable companions, The Lover, Corinax, and Piet, were associated. The trio hopped off from the six furlong barrier, and came over the first two furlongs in 25 4-5, finishing up their task in I.IS 1-5. Piet was tailed off at the end, while The Lover and Corinax were practically on terms when the post was reached. The recent racing The Lover has had has worked a big improvement in him. and his admirers must be pleased with the manner in which he is acquitting himself in his training operations. Idun and Justify moved over six furlongs in 1.22 2-5, while Ballymoy 11. covered a similar distance in 3.19. Clarus was ahead of Palmares at the end of half a mile in 50. but the latter was doing much below his best. Gold Money and Envoy beat Avoncourt over half a mile in 49 3-s—a smart performance. This trio claim an engagement in the Juvenile Handicap at Te Aroha, and, provided they could reproduce this form in that event, their chances would not be at all slight. It is somo months now since Daylight was seen at Ellerslie, and the manner in which he stepped over half a mile in 50 4-5 proves that he still retains his old speed. Princess Ronnie covered a round on No. 2 grass in 1.50 2-5, and was going easily throughout.

OTAHUHU TROTS

ROSE BINGEN SCRATCHED FOR ALEXANDRA HANDICAP The trotting mare Rose Bingen, who put up a good performance on Saturday when she ran second to Sister Beatrice, was scratched at 2.15 p.m. to-day for the Alexandra Handicap tomorrow. The Te Awamutu trained mare was on a 4.36 mark and was one of the favourites for the event. In her absence A. (“Darkle”) Broughton will drive Mutu, and the latter will no doubt be accorded a big following and prove hard to dispose of.
