NEW OTAHUHU CUP RECORD Some Stirring Contests LOCH MOIGH AND PADLOCK AGAIN IN BEAUTIFUL WEATHER AND BEFORE A LARGE ATTENDANCE, THE OTAHUHU TROTTING CLUB OPENED ITS SUMMER CARNIVAL ON SATURDAY, WHEN THE ATTRACTIVE CARD PRESENTED WAS PRODUCTIVE OF MANY STIRRING CONTESTS. THESE WERE CROWNED WITH EXCITING FINISHES WHICH WERE A FINE COMPLIMENT TO THE HANDICAPPER, MR. C. E. GOOSEMAN. WHO WAS WARMLY CONGRATULATED ON ALL SIDES ON THE EXCELLENT RESULTS OBTAINED.
‘VTUMEROUS enjoyable trotting functions have been held annually by the Otahuhu Club, at this period of the year when the popular Cup fixture is the centre of attraction, but it is doubtful if from a racing point of view there has ever been a more auspicious opening than that of Saturday. All conditions were favourable for a successful day’s sport and the large number of patrons visiting Alexandra Park received good value for their admission fee. The track was in splendid order, and fast times were the order of the day, several competitors recording improved times, while in winding up the watch to 4.25 Terence Dillon established a record for the Otahuhu Cup. It was most unfortunate and extremely disappointing to all concerned that the Mangere crack miler, Nelson Fame, was unable to complete his task of lowering Acron’s eight furlong record. August’s fine pacer showed a rare turn of speed in getting to the half mile in 59 3-5. The management of the meeting was well up to the high standard for which the suburban club is noted. The totalisator showed a slight decrease from the first day turnover of last year, the figures being, 1927, £46,151; 1928, £44,972. ROMA BINGEN AT LAST The Trial Handicap saw Roma Bingen score her first win for a long period. Billy Carbine. £572, was solidly supported, while there was plenty of money in support of Real Todd, £505. and Etta Cole, £386. Etta Cole, Royal Bob and Lord Haldane failed to go off correctly. Jewel Wave took up the role of pacemaker from Real Todd, Royal Bob, Tiki, Billy Carbine and Leo Mauritius. On the bend there was a mix-up, and Colonel Thorpe and Royal Bob were pulled up. In the straight the second time Jewel Wave got up, leaving Real Todd in charge from Leo Mauritius, Roma Bingen and Billy Carbine, with a gap back to Jewel Wave, Anseline, Roez and Tiki. Along the back Roma Bingen got up, but quickly settled down, to be up with Real Todd into the straight from Leo Mauritius and Billy Carbine, the others being out of it. Roma Bingen broke again on the turn, and a little further on Real Todd followed suit, Roma Bingen settling - down quickly to win by three parts of a length from Real Todd, with Billy Carbine two and ahalf lengths away third, half a length in front of Anseline. Next w r ere Leo Mauritius and Jewel Wave, with Roez well down the running. GREAT PETER'S GOOD. WIN
A big field of twenty-two contested the second event, the Tamaki Handicap, and in a fair pool the four-year-old, Great Peter, was made favourite with £1,130 invested on his chances, best backed of the others being Enawah, £933, Great Actress, £358, and Ursaline, £3Ol. Enawah failed to go off and was in the rear the whole way, and D’Artagnan pulled up after going a couple of furlongs. Beatty, Peter Grattan, Charming Pronto, Gold Circle, Halgana, Horizon and Master Huia was the Order soon after the start, and passing the stands Beatty still held, charge narrowly over Peter Grattan, Halgana, Charming Pronto, Horizon, Beauty Spot, Master Huia, Silver Link, and Admiral Lock, the last pair being Enawah and Great Actress. At the top turn Halgana had a slight advantage, but Peter Grattan led Halgana, Gold Circle, Our Patch, Admiral Lock, Master Huia, and Great Peter, the last named coming from well back. The favourite put up a great effort in the straight and came on to win by a length from the outsider Peter Grattan, with Our Patch a length and a-half away third. Then came Concertina, who finished fast, Gold Circle, Halgana, Master Huia, Admiral Lock and Red Star. MUTU’S SURPRISE Mutu sprang a mild surprise in the Mount Albert Handicap. Raima £1,289, Gold Sovereign £654, Bright Light £521, and Tamerlane £368 were the best backed, but the first pair lost their chances at the start. Sebisca and Bright Light made all the early running, being attended past the stands by Profiteer at an interval of ten lengths, with a similar distance back to Mutu, Rio Alto, Tony Victor and Floraline, with the favourite, who broke twice, well back. Sebisca and Bright Light were still there passing the stands the second time, their nearest attendants being Mutu, Profiteer, Floraline, Toll Chimes, Tony Victor, Real the Great, A 1 Mack and Raima. The last named put in a great run from here. Mutu ran up to Bright Light crossing the top, and there was little between them into the straight, with Real the Great a couple of lengths back and Sebisca and Raima heading the remainder. Mutu did best to score by three parts of a length from Real the Great, with Bright Light a couple of lengths further back. Sebisca was fourth, and then came Bingen King, Raima and Toll Chimes.
CUP TO TERENCE DILLON A fine race for the Otahuhu Cup resulted in a victory for Terence Dillon. Concliff, £1,931, was a hot favourite, and there was big money for The Shrew, £1,399, Machine Gun-Sea Pearl bracket, £1,246, and Terence Dillon, £1,160. At the start Jewel Pointer was not ready, and he took no part in the race. First Carbine was at the head of affairs at the end of half a mile, with The Shrew, Black Lila, Peter Swift, Terence Dillon, Concliff, Sea Pearl, and Escapade following, with Peterwah last. Passing the stands the second time The Shrew and Black Lila were on terms ahead of First Carbine, Terence Diilon, Peter Swift, Concliff (who was interfered with here), Sea Pearl, Machine Gun, and Escapade. Running into the back stretch Terence Dillon took charge, being followed through by Machine Gun, the former turning for home two lengths ahead of Machine Gun, with Concliff and Peter Swift three lengths further back, and Sea Pearl next. Terence Dillon held his own in the run to the judge, to win by a length and a-half from the tiring Machine Gun, with Peter Swift, who trotted a good race, a couple of lengths away third. A length away was Sea Pearl, and next home were Concliff, First Carbine, The Shrew, and Escapade. SISTER BEATRICE SCORES
All started in the President’s Handicap, Native Star £1,674, Waikaha £1,012, Sister Beatrice £909 and Rose Bingen £796 being the order on the totalisator. Young Blake failed to go off the mark, and Native Star was slow away. Peter McKinney made the most of his handicap, and the first time past the stands was out 15 lengths
clear of Sister Beatrice, Native Star, Rose Bingen, Napland and Waikaha, not a great deal separating this bunch. Peter McKinney was 20 lengths ahead in the next circuit, with the others still together, but three furlongs from home the leader began to stop badly, and broke crossing the top. Sister Beatrice led into the straight from Rose Bingen, Peter McKinney, Waikaha and Native Star, and she went on to win by a neck from Rose Bingen, with Waikaha three lengths back, and Peter McKinney a similar distance in fourth place. Native Star was fifth, and Money Spider and Young Blake a long way back. *
CONSISTENT LOCH MOIGH The field in the Papakura Handicap was reduced from eleven to eight, and as expected, Loch Moigh was backed down to a very cramped price, being entrusted with £2,103, against Dalmeny’a £1,166, and NatiVe Prince £1,137, who were next fancied. Reliance failed to go off right, and Native Prince was slow away. Pitaroa was the early leader, being attended past the stand the first time by Gold Dial, Loch Moigh, Dalmeny, and Plorent, and this was the order in the next round. Crossing the top the last time the order was Pitaroa, Loch Moigh, Dalmeny, and Plorent, not a length separating them as they came into the straight. Once in lino Loch Moigh drew out, to beat Dalmeny by a neck, with Plorent half a length back. Pitaroa was fourth, and Native Prince and Gold Dial next. PADLOCK WINS EASILY The Myers Handicap was the best of good things for Padlock, who was a warm favourite with £1,647 invested on his chances, fair support being accorded Kohara £849, Great Bingen £733, and Sea Pearl £7OB. At the start Nelson Fame was very slow away, and Direct Morning also, the latter pulling up. Hue Coronado and Padlock went away quickly from Nelson Tasker, Lord Nepean, Black Lila, All Bell and Sea Pearl. Passing the stands Hue Coronado and Padlock were together in the van, clear of Nelson Tasker, Black Lila, All Bell, Sea Pearl and Kohara. Padlock was in charge down the back and he then went away, turning into the home stretch half a dozen lengths clear of Nelson Tasker and Hue Coronado, with Black Lila and All Bell following. The favourite finally won easily by two lengths from Black Lila, with Sea Pearl a length and a-half back. All Bell was fourth, close up, and then came Nelson Tasker, Jewel Pointer, Kohara and Great Bingen. AN AUCKLAND FINISH A big field contested the Railway Handicap, in saddle. It was keen betting between Hal Chimes £1,089, Liberate £894, Uncle Bert £7lO, Luvan £675 Van Rich £524 and Mulwaree £506.’ Bronze Patch was in charge at the end of a couple of furlongs, being followed by Master Councillor, Luvan, Liberate, Van Rich, Blair Audubon Grattan Thorpe and Gold Jacket. Crossing the top Luvan went to the front and showed the way Into the straight to Van Rich, Gold Jacket, Liberate and Master Councillor. There was a great finish between Gold Jacket and Luvan, the latter winning by a nose. Van Rich was three parts of a length away, with Bingen King well up fourth. Then came Liberate, Scandal and Mulwaree. The first four horses are trained in Auckland, and so quite a local flavour was attached to the finish.
