TENNIS TEST MATCH TWO GAMES TO FRANCE By Cable. — Press Assocla; i-jn. — Copyright. SYDNEY, Thursday. The second series of lawn tennis*test matches between France and Australia was begun to-day in extremely warm and humid weather. The Australians did not appear to the best advantage. except in doubles match, the finish of which was thrilling. The Australian’s narrow win aroused intense excitement, among the very large attendance of spectators. In the singles Brugnon defeated Patterson, 4— 6, 6 —4, 6 —l. The Australian was brilliant in the first set, his services being severe and his all-round play fine, but he fell away, and then Brugnon passed him repeatedly. Patterson was sluggish in the final set, Ms returns being particularly bad. Borotra defeated Crawford, T—s, 6 —l. In the first set the Australian compelled the visitor to display his agility. Crawford had a great chahce of success when he was leading, but failed. In the second set Borotra chopped heavily to Crawford’s backhand, and advanced to the net ana dominated the game. In the doubles Crawford and Hopman defeated Borotra and Boussus 3 •; 5 10 g Faulty smashing lost Australia the first set after a good recovery. Crawford, who was disappointing in the early stages, improved. Hopman was stylish, and played the best of the quartette B ” rot ff the end made a brilliant attfpP* save the match, but Australians kept the ball away from him throughout.—A. and NT.Z.
