GERMANY CRITICISED By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. BERLIN, Tuesday. In discussing the Army Budget, the Minister of Defence, Herr Groener, admitted that the cost was high, but contended that Germany spent £ls a year less on each soldier than did Britain. A. and N.Z. The German defence budget of £35,000,000 raised some criticism in France early in January. It was pointed out tbat Germany would spend more in 1928 for her skeleton army of 100,000 men, without tanks, airplans and big guns, than she spent before the war on the Imperial Army of 700,000 men. The critics concentrated on the item of £140,000 for the maintenance of gas masks, and they asked if the repairs included gold-plating.
