HOURS OF SMALL SHOPS

EXTENSION GRANTED MORE APPLICANTS LISTED By Magisterial order made this morning, the hours of 60 small stationery shops in Auckland and suburbs have been extended, and it is anticipated that a great many other small shopkeepers—totalling nearly 1,000 in the aggregate—will follow in the footsteps of their fel-low-applicants, and approach the Court later for relief. The Magistrate who heard the applications this morning:, Mr. E. O. Cutten, granted the full exemption appiled for: 8 o’clock closing on four days in the week, 9 o’clock on the late night, and 1 o’clock on the half-day, subject always to the provision that shop assistants be employed under the award conditions and hours. The general secretary of the Small Shopkeepers’ Association. Mr. A. E. Lynne, has in hafid hundreds of similar applications, and another group of possibly more than those heard to-day, will come before the Court for consideration on Monday next. Later, when the Auckland district has been dealt with, Mr. Lynne lias to visit other parts of the Dominion, and endeavour to satisfy the requirements of the other shopkeepers in similar positions, who are anxious to take advantage of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act of last year to apply for extention of hours.
