OTAHUHU TROTS SOUTHERN HORSES ARRIVE A STRONG CONTINGENT Most of the visiting: trainers with their various charges claiming en- ; gagements at the Otahuhu meeting on Saturday, are now at headquarters. A strong contingent arrived this morning, and the remainder will reach their destination to-morrow. The following arrived by the express this morning: W. J. Tomkinson (Concliff, Dalmenv, Young Blake), ID. Withers (Great Bingen, Peter Swift, Great Actress, Real the Great), J. Henderson (Terence Dillon), from Christchurch. Jewel Pointer, in charge of Claude Fairraan, also returned from the Cathedral City. At Palmerston North W r . Hughes, with Loch Moigh and Padlock, and “Skipper” Price (Native Star) joined the Southerners. TARANAKI QUOTA By the steamer Ngapuhi came the Taranaki contingent comprising Bright Light (C. Kasper), Sister Beatrice (A. Corrigan), Real Todd (C. W r illetts), Our Patch (W. Fleming), Hue Coronado (J. Heginbotham). To-morrow morning’s express will bring R. B. Berry’s team (Machine Gun, Sea Pearl, Jean McElwyn and Petroleuse), while A. E. Bussell will put in an appearance with Tamerlane'. J. J. Kennerley will not visit the fixture with Jackie Audubon, and Native Chief, who has been transferred to J. Bryce’s stable owing to the expiration of Kennerley’s lease, will not come North.

There was a light drizzle about six o’clock this morning when training operations commenced, in addition to which a heavy shower had fallen about I 3 a.m. The weather cleared up later, and the tracks were in great order. The majority of horses, both visiting and home, have got through their preparations, but several gallops were staged on number one grass track. David Garrick and Matu slipped along over a mile in 1.47, the first half taking 52 2-5, the Cup candidate being held back to his companion right through. Tiega and Hym great also went a mile, which they covered in 1.45. Tiega was going so easily that he would appear to hold the rest of the field in the Stewards* safe. TWO-YEAR-OLD’S SPRINT Prince Humphrey was allotted a task over five furlongs, which he covered in 1.3 2-5. Tea Miss and King Midas ran the first furlong of five in 1.4, the three taking 38 2-5, while the journey was accomplished in 1.3 4-5. Eden Hall and Ladykiller were associated in. a seven furlong task, which was covered in 1.30. The last six took 1.16 2-5. Eden Hall promises to be well supported in the Cup. Footpad and Banket were slipped over four furlongs in 50, finishing on terms. covered six in 1.14, and appears to have thrived on his recent racing. Mandane was sent seven furlongs, which she left behind in 1.30 2-5. She ran the first quarter in 26 2-5, the half in 52, and five furlongs in 1.5. In the Cup she will be ridden by H. Wiggins, and should be with the leaders at the finish. A LIKELY MAIDEN Freehold and Thrift, the Warplane— Beilina filly from Tilley’s stable that promises to start favourite for the Maiden, 'were associated over four furlongs, the first furlong taking 12 and the quarter 24, the time occupied on the journey being 48 3-5. Though both were close in to the rails it was the best gallop of the morning. Ruanui recorded 1.3 2-5 for five furlongs, the first quarter taking 25 1-5. Paganelli began slowly over the early stages of four furlongs, being content with a sprint up the straight. zThe majority of the others were given steady work on the plough and the inside, Joy Bird in particular being pleasing. , . .. After breakfast Kiosk was stretched out over four furlongs (wide out). The first furlong occupied 12 1-5, the quarter 24 2-5, and the full distance 49 1-5.
