WORK AT WANGANUI
JAMIESON’S BIG STRING TRACK IN GOOD ORDER (Special to THE SU A - .) WANGANUI, To-day. The weather was again fine for training operations this morning, with promise of a scorching day. Not all the visitors have arrived yet, but trainers who were at the Taranaki meeting are loud in praise of the tracks, which have greatly benefited owing to a heavy shower on Sunday morning, prior to which they had been watered fo.r three nights. * The difference was noticeable this morning. when several fast gallops were witnessed, No. 1 grass track being available for fast work. Covent Garden (light-weight) and White Ringlet (Barry) were sent five furlongs, the former doing best and moving well within himself. The first furlong took 12 3-5, the quarter 24 1-5, three 36 2-5 and the full distance was covered in 1.2 1-5. LYSANDER’S SPRINT Lysander (with a light-weight up) covered six furlongs in 1.15 2-5, the first furlong taking 12 3-5 and the next three 36 2-5, making him register 49 for the first half-mile. • He is well and promises to be prominent in the Jackson Stakes on Saturday. Service suffered by comparison when she moved slowly over four furlongs in 56. Double Mint, King Mart and Orbit were associated in a five-furlong flutter, in which King Mart got all the worst of the start and was alongside Double Mint at the end in 1.4 1-5. Civility was given her first fast four furlongs, occupying 49 2-5 on the journey. The first furlong was covered in 12 and the quarter in 24. She pulled up well, and even 9.0 in the Stewards’ Handicap may not stop her, though Tiega is better treated. Damaris finished well ahead of Our Jack and Hallownoon over six furlongs. The first furlongs took 13, two 25 3-5, and the half-mile 49 3-5, Damaris registering 1.17 for the full journey, with Hallownoon well back. Marica went four furlongs by herself in 50 2-5, the first furlong taking 12 and the second 24. A STABLE DUO After breakfast War Wings and Vexillum were sent five furlongs, which they covered in 1.4 3-5. The first furlong took 13, the quarter 25 2-5, and the three furlongs 34 2-5. Both Dwyer’s charges are engaged in the maiden race. Limosa and Ironic, both wide out, had a five-furlong task, which the former got through in 1.6 3-5, Ironic taking 1.7 3-5. The first furlong took 14, the first quarter 26 1-9, and the three furlongs 38 4-5, but Ironic was dropping back at the finish. Others noticed doing useful work were Tiega, Tea Miss, Greengrocer, Ladykiller, Sarchee, Paganelli, David Garrick and Jamieson’s team of six, which includes Prince Humphrey. In addition to the defections notified yesterday (Manly and Gold Dawn), Ned Kelly and Wenday were relieved of their engagements at 9 a.m. to-day, at which time Hymgreat was also scratched- Dethal is another certain non-starter.

OTAHUHU TROTS
QUIET AT EPSOM NOTES AND COMMENTS Very little serious work was witnessed at Epsom this morning in preparation for the Otahuhu fixture opening on Saturday. A few visitors have put in an appearance, but the Southern horses will not be seen on the track till Thursday, when fast work should be in full swing, with the final tuning up on Friday. J. Shaw worked his large team before breakfast, only one being asked to step fast, and the remainder restricted to half pace. Leo Mauritius covered a mile and a-half, stepping out freely. Dad’s Hope and Pitaroa were dis-
(patched at the two-mile disc, and moved in an impressive manner throughout. Dad’s Hope had a length on Pitaroa at the half mile, and finished stronger in the run to the posL Peterwah, Nelson Tasker, Napland ad Enawah gave an interesting display over several circuits, Peterwah and Nelson Tasker led over the first mile, where Napland broke and took little part in the bout. Peterwah and Nelson Tasker finished very fast, with honours to Peterwah. CONCLIFF’S GREAT TRIAL Concliff has set Aucklanders talking by his phenomenal trial over a mile, accomplished at Christchurch early last week. The time recorded was brilliant, and it appears that the exAustralian has struck his true form. Concliff is on 4.28 in the Otahuhu Cup. and on such a trial will have to be seriously considered. The Palmerston North owned and trained Loch Moigh. who has won several races this season, is entered in the Papakura Handicap at the Otahuhu fixture on Saturday. When the brilliant son of Nelson Derby and Norice, visited Alexandra Park last December, he was unable to sport silk, owing to injuries inflicted through his fighting manners while travelling the U-G. However, on this occasion Loch Moigh will make the trip in a specially padded cattle truck, and it is to be hoped that trainer Hughes will be rewarded for his trouble. VERY UNLUCKY Machine Gun was unlucky in the Midsummer Handicap, run at Addington on Saturday. He was interfered with on two occasions, and had he kept out of trouble no doubt he would have won. Machine Gun is an Otahuhu Cup candidate, and on his creditable run in the South will once more be in demand at the Park this weekend. Bingen King, who beat a big field of unhoppled trotters at the Auckland summer carnival, is doing all that is asked by his trainers, and promises to be at the top of his form to fulfil his egagements next Saturday. The handsome black is one of the most improved pacers seen in the North. RECORD BREAKING The response to the prizes offered by the Otahuhu Trotting Club for record breaking contests has met with a very poor reception. The Mangere-trained Nelson Fame is the only speed merchant to nominate, and as his best mile is 2.9, he will require to be at his very best if his owner collects the purse. The conditions of the test are that £IOO will be paid to any horse beating the New Zealand mile record, with a further £250 if reduced by two seconds, from a flying start. Fit and well Nelson Fame will no doubt improve his present record, but will be moving to better 2.3 5-5. A FAST MILE Jean McElwyn accounted for the Linwood Handicap at Addington on Saturday, winning in impressive style, and in the smart time of 2.12 1-5. She was ridden a fine race by J. Behrns, who had her nicely placed over the early stages. At the two furlongs she she took the lead, and never gave her opponents any chance of overhauling her. Jean McElwyn is engaged in the Railway Handicap on the opening day of the Otahuhu fixture, and handicapped on 24 yards, in a 2.17 class, would have been hard to dispose of. However, the handicapper will adjust matters and she ■will find that going fast in the South means going back in the North.
