Scrub Fire.—-The Mount Albert FinBrigade received call to a scrub fire in New North Road at about 11 o’clock last evening, and the blaze was extinguished before any damage was done. A Big Eel. —An eel, 4ift long, 20in in girth, and weighing 2241 b, was captured by Mr. T. Kurukuru in a creek running through Mr. Furze’s property at Opurure, near Te Kulti, on Tuesday last. * Badge for Museum. —A sketch of a proposed shield and badge for Auckland Museum members, which will incorporate the scientific and historical aspects of the Institute’s work, is being considered by the council. Fires At Thames. —The third fire in Thames in a week occurred at 4.30 on Sunday morning, when an empty sixromed house near the Old People’s Home, at Tararu, was destroyed by fire. Motor-Cyclist Knocked Down.— A motor-cyclise, B. Smith, of Morrinsville, was hit by a car while he was going from Te Aroha to Morrinsville. He received serious injuries to his face and knee and was taken to a private hospital. Home Science Bursary. —A borne science bursary at the Otago University has been won oy Miss Thelma Simons, a daughter of Mr. W. T. Simons, of Main’s Avenue, Whangarei. Miss Simons is a pupil of the Whang.--rei High School. House Damaged By Fire. —The rear portion of a six-roomed house m Francis Street, Grey Lynn, was badly damaged by fire early yesterday morning. The City Brigade extinguished the fire, the cause of which is unknown. The occupier, Mr. Coward, was away at the time of the outbreak. Memorial Service. —A memorial service for the late Field-Marshal Earl Haig was held yesterday afternoon in the Wellington Town Hall, which was crowded. The Rev. J. Blanchard delivered an inspiring address, the “Dead March” was played, and the hymns. “Onward, Christian Soldiers” and “Abide With Me,” were sung.—Press Association. Three Grass Fires. —The City Fire Brigade suppressed two grass fires on Saturday afternoon at Freeman’s Bay, on the property of the Vacuum Oil Company, before any damage was done. Yesterday afternoon a small grass fire in Rewi Road, Mount Roskill, was suppressed by the Mount Roskill Brigade. Operation on Liner. —Ken "Weeks. 1.6, a b ass-boy, was operated upon on the liner Aorangi a few hours out from Sydney, his trouble being appendicitis. The ship’s speed was reduced while the surgeon. Dr. C. G. performed the operation. The boy was sent to the Auckland Hospital to-day for after-treatment.
