HISTORIC MAORI HOUSE
TO BE RE ASSEMBLED AT MUSEUM ADDITION TO MAORI COURT “Hotunui,” the famous carved House from Thames, which Mr. George Graham recently described for SUN readers, is shortly to be re-assembled at the new Auckland M useum. The large meeting house, which was handed over to the museum in 1925 by the Ngati-maru people, will be erected in the Maori court of the War Memorial Museum, and it has been decided to proceed at once with the reconditioning of this important structure. The bases of some of the carvings which stood in the ground and are somewhat decayed, will need re-butting and their carving retouched, and various other parts will require repairs. It has also been decided to proceed with the dismantling of some of the wall cases of the old building, prior to their removal to the store rooms of the nfrw jpuseum and to enable the prompt removal of the large carved houses and the war canoe as soon as arrangements can be made for their reception in the new Maori court. The Council of the Institute recently gave the required authority.
