AUCKLAND DISTRICT HAS 743 LAWYERS

REPORT OF SOCIETY AN INCREASING NUMBER The number of barristers and solicitors certificated in the Auckland district totals 743 according to the annual report of the Law Society. Last year there were 217 barristers and 508 solicitors. This year there are 223 alid 520 respectively, the admissions for the year having been seven barristers and 15 solicitors, while 12 solicitors were admitted as barristers. The report deals with formal matters and states that a special meeting of the members of the society was held during the year to discuss the proposal of the Wellington Law Society for the establishment of a solicitors’ fidelity fund. The meeting was overwhelmingly opposed to the proposition, and its views were placed by the society’s delegates before the meeting of the New Zealand Law Society called to consider the proposal. As a result of the attitude of this and certain other societies the proposal was withdrawn. The revenue account for the year showed a surplus of £1,685 16s 3d.
