CANNIBAL TROUT IN WAIHOU RIVER

FISH IN BAD STATE WAIPA TO BE CLOSED Mr. S. C. Snell last night drew the attention of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, which met at Putaruru, to the bad state of the fish in the Waihou River. He thought this was caused by “cannibal” trout, which ate the small fish, and he advocated that the river be thrown open for minnow and spoon fishing, so that the “sharks” could be cleaned out, and the stream re-stocked. Mr. Routledge, ranger, endorsed this view, and it was decided to open the Waihou .for minnow and spoon fishing for one year. WAIPA TO BE CLOSED Mr. F. Peters pointed out that the diversion of the Waikato had killed hundreds of trout, and as many fish were now sheltering in the Waipq., he suggested this river be closed for one year to assist in re-stocking the Waikato when the water cleared. Mr. Allen seconded this motion, and it was agreed that the Waipa be closed for one year.
