Suburban Cricket
THE MATCHES REVIEWED Conclusion of Eighth Round PLAY in the eighth round of the championship series of the Suburban Association’s competition will be continued to-morrow when all games will be concluded. Two matches have passed what seems the interesting stage, but Ponsonby and Green Lane should provide a close game.
THE advanced state of the EllerslieHarbour Board B and the Harbour Board A-Glen Eden matches gives every indication of what the results should be. but the game between Ponsonby and Green Lane has not been robbe dof any degree of uncertainty as yet. Nevertheless, it is safe to predict wins for Ellerslie, Harbour Board A and Ponsonby . Glen Eden was apparently content to
provide the harvest for Harbour Board A bowlers last Saturday, and barring the fine stand by Kay and Spearpoint, the innings was a very sorry affair altogether. The Board went to the wickets with the score of 123 to better and this was accomplished before the fall of a wicket. Those responsible were Turner and Breese. the former quite out-shining his more quiet partner before he left on the score sheet with his own score at SB. What confidence was reposed in these two men was shown when Turner left the crease for the unexpected rot. occasioned by A. Belsham well-night had the Board in a panic. The majority of players had left with the certain knowledge that Glen Eden might try in vain to dislodge Skipper Dunning (next man) and Breese. but such was not to be Dunning left after hitting 22, and the next three wickets fell for 12 runs between them and Mann, the only one left, just managed to hold the fort with Breese till time was called. Notwithstanding, the batsmen to come are all reliable, and there should be a much bigger total than 213 for Glen Eden to pass to avoid the innings defeat that seems inevitable. A BIG HURDLE Another team in a sad position is Harbour Board B. The Colts with four wickets down for 47 have fallen from grace. Ellerslie’s score of 325 is a big hurdle for a team to clear after such a bad start. The not-out. men, Liddle and Nicklin, were apparently quite at home when “stumps” was called, and may carry on nobly. Brighton and Richardson are good for double figures, but there is little possibility of seeing Ellerslie’s total being even halved. So it seems that the Colts are in much the same plight as Glen Eden. The game with some vestige of interest about it is that between Green Lane and Ponsonby. The latter rattled up 278 in great style, and in response Green Lane had two wickets down for* 64. Green Lane has no great name for big scores, but that unknown quantity might crop up just this very time with unpleasant consequences for Ponsonby. It may be unkind to mention it, but should Green Lane lower Ponsonby’s colours the competition will be robbed of a deal of interest as this side is the only team that rivals the leaders, Harbour Board A. The Lane has a hard task to do and would he worthy of congratulations should it be accomplished, but it is unlikely. Ponsonby should bold its own. The bowling was good last Saturday, but a triffe unlucky.
