RAKINO ISLAND
MARINE PARK PROPOSAL OFFER TO COUNCIL A definite stage has now been reached in the proposal to secure a Marine Park for Auckland, either by buying an island, or by buying and then exchanging with the Government for Motuihi. The latter, with its beautiful beaches not available to the public because of a few quarantine huts on one corner of the island, is regarded as the most desirable. Last evening the Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon, reported to the council that he had been approached by the owners of Rakino Island and others interested in the formation of a marine park, and had taken an option of two months to purchase at a price stated. The price was not disclosed. The option was referred to the Parks Committee with a request for a report on the desirability or otherwise of proceeding with the subject.
