ROYAL, KINGSLAND

“THE GILDED HIGHWAY” “The Gilded Highway” beckoned alluringly to the Welby family, and they followed its call to learn anew the old lesson that money cannot bring happiness, and that greed sows the seeds of discontent more rapidly than simple living. Such is the lesson to be gained from this picture, which opened at the Theatre Royal yesterday. While the story, which was adapted by Marian Constance from W. B. Maxwell’s novel, “A Little More,” is not entirely a new theme, so forcefully produced and perfectly acted is this photoplay that at no moment does the interest of the audience lag. It is told in dramatic and novel fashion and the entire cast give noteworthy performances. Dorothy Devore and John Harron are featured, while Macklyn Arbuckle, Sheldon Lewis, Florence Turner, Myrna Loy, Andree Tourneur, Gardner James, and Mathilde Comont comprise the brilliant supporting cast. “The Gilded Highway,” although it preaches, does so in subtle and interesting manner, and makes excellent screen entertainment. “Convoy,” featuring Dorothy Mackaill and Lowell Sherman, is also on the same programme.
