CABLE ALIGHT
UNDERGROUND FIRE CROWD GATHERS TO WATCH Thin spirals of blue smoke curling through cracks in the pavement at the entrance to the railway station in Queen, Street this morning attracted the usual gathering of loiterers. As the spirals of smoke increased, the smell of burning rubber drew still more spectators, until the scene resembled a large gathering of sightseers round a young volcano in the thermal regions. It was merely another small underground fire. The underground cable near the Post Office had fused and caught alight. Two men were rushed out by £he Electric Power Board, and the damage repaired in a few minutes.
Outbreaks of this kind are numerous every year. They are usually caused by water getting through the cracks in the bitumen and damaging the electric cable. Sometimes it is months after the water percolates through the cracks before the cable actually fuses.
