MAJESTIC
JOHN BARRYMORE AND “HIS LADY” “A delightful and well-balanced entertainment” •describes the current programme at the Majestic Theatre. Drama comedy, and music all are represented in this entertainment, which is headed by “His Lady,” starring John Barrymore and Delores Costello. This wonderful film which has received the highest praise from critics and press the world over, has been described by one critic, “as being stamped with the true hall-mark of artistry, and being well-nigh perfect in photography and technique. Set in the days of Louis XV., when the Court of France lay in the lap of pleasure, the film paints in vivid colours the story of a -tender love romance in an age which was above all things brilliant, although lacking in those warmer impluses which make up true As such the picture provides a wonderful series of contrasts —scenes of unparalleled splendour in the glittering halls of Versailles, rural Picardy in springtime, dim visions of the Parisian underworld, or the stark horror of a convict ship, packed with wretched herds of outcast women and depraved men shipped overseas. Into this world of untold wealth and direst poverty, of lavish beneficence and heartless cruelty, were , swept the two lovers whose golden romance is painted with a master’s touch. The genius of Barrymore is the inspiration of the film, and makes the character of Fabian live through a fascinating series of everchanging portraits. To the title role, Dolores Costello has brought all h<?r beauty and talent, and her portrayal is crowned with eminent success in a really notable production.” The supporting programme is of the same high standard for which the Majestic is noted, and includes a New Zealand Gazette, “New Zealand News and Views,” with the latest news of events in our own country, a beautiful scenic of the famous “Fairy Springs at Rotorua, and a highly diverting comedy, “Spanish Romeo,” an unusual story of bulls and men who were not bull fighters. The musical programme presented by the Majestic Orchestra, under Mr. Whiteford- Waugh, is an entertainment in itself. This talented combination specially features as this week’s Overture, '‘The Belle of New York, and Includes in the incidental music rendered, “Nocturne,” (Karganoff), "Melodious Memories,” (Finck), Schubert’s famous “Serenade,” "Musical Gems,” (Tschaikowsky) and A Midsummer Night Suite,” by Mendelssohn.
