Auckland Retains Motor Speed Cup

RACING AT MURIWAI VISITOR WINS LIGHT EVENT Saturday's motor races at Muriwai barely recompensed the few thousand people who went there for their ride over an extremely rough and dusty road. There were no thrilling finishes, and very little that would be recollected with pleasure, except by the few hundred people who camped at the beach over the week-end, and had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. As for the running of the meeting, a few improvements might well be effected for next year. The events were lamentably late in starting, and the appreciated small things were lacking. No indication whatever was given to the public as to the scratchings or rehandicaps, and the times for the races were difficult to obtain. A big blackboard with these details would have been appreciated. Moreover, the question of the distance of laps might well be reconsidered. Time is barely an essential in these races, which cannot continue without public support, but the sums paid for admission were barely compensated for by seeing some five turns in front of the main stand, and waiting thereafter for several minutes before the cars returned from a haze in which they disappeared less than a mile from the gathering of spectators. The feature of the day’s racing was the third win in succession of the Stutz owned by R. B. Wilson, Auckland, of the 50-mile New Zealand Cup, at an average speed of 83.5 miles an hour, which was faster than in races with fewer turns. The car had things its own way after H. K. Cutten’s Miller had to stop while Cutten connected up his earth wire. The Miller gave every promise of making a great race of it, and his misfortune was also a misfortune to the public, leaving the only legitimate challenger in C. W. Hamilton’s Sunbeam, which got left on the first lap, but afterwards actually gained on the Stutz. both eventually finishing miles ahead of the Mercer owned by H. Carter. Wilson, with his third win, keeps the cup, valued at £lO5. The light car cup feature was a runaway for the eight-cylindered Bugatti, which simply left its two competitors standing, and won by nearly pine miles Results: OPEN SPRINT HANDICAP li miles straight..
