“FINANCIAL CATASTROPHE” By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. MELBOURNE, Saturday. When speaking at Warrnambool with regard to railway retrenchment, the Premier, Mr. E. J. Hogan, said that the Railway Department and the closer settlement activities had become financial catastrophes. The State was J.° sl , ns £1,000,000 on these activities. Motoi competition was a serious thing for the railways. The Trades Hall Council has decided to seek a conference with the Parliamentary Labour Party to advise the Railway Union to hold stop-work meetings until all men dismissed have been reinstated. There is much opposition in union circles to the retrenchment proposals. —A. and N.Z.
