OIL MAGNATE ARRESTED
INFORMATION REFUSED INQUIRY INTO SCANDAL By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. WASHINGTON, Sat. Mr. Robert Stewart, chairman of the board of directors of the Standard Oil Company of Indiana, was arrested last night owing to his second. refusal to supply information to the Oil Committee of the Senate concerning the disposition of £600,000 profits of the extinct Continental Trading Company of Canada, of which the Government alleges that Mr. A. B. Fall, former Secretary of the Interior, received more than £46,000. Contempt of proceedings will be charged against Mr. Stewart if, following his arraignment to-day before the Vice-President, General C. G. Dawes, in Senate, he still declines to answer the questions. This is one of the few occasions in American history that the Senate has taken on the aspect of a Court of Law to mete out punishment to a private citizen. A later message states that Mr. Stewart has obtained a temporary writ of habeas corpus, until February 7, under a bond of £2OO. —A. and N.Z.
