Cycle Racing at Blandford Park

H. PELHAM’S EASY WIN

Two cycling events promoted by the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club were held at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon. The old-timers’ race, of two laps, a most interesting event, and W. L. Curvenger caused a deal of surprise when he rushed past the post to defeat the favourite, G. Deans, and make the rest of the field look like second-raters. U. Pelham ribbed the one-mile event of any interest and excitement by his runaway victory, when he won with ridiculous ease. In the two miles the limit men made the pace very fast, and the back-markers found it impossible to improve to any extent on the starts they were giving away. Following are the results: One Mile Open Handicap. —H. Pelham, 30yds, 1; W. Archer, 120yds, 2; I. George, 80yds, 3. There were 11 starters. Won by 30yds. Time, 2.30 4-5. Two Miles Open Handicap. —H. Lawler, 120yds, 1; K. Rae, 120yds, 2; P. Rickman, 160yds, 3. Only the placed riders finished. Time, 4.59. Old-timers’ Race, two laps.—W. L. Curvegen, scr. 1; J. Dean, scr, 2; G. Herring, scr, 3. Also started: J. Marriott, M. A. Herring, scr; G. Hellingback, 30 yards: S. Oakes, J. Willoughby, 40yds. Won by a length. Time, 60sec.
