GRASS FIRES INCREASE
WEEK-END OUTBREAKS NONE SERIOUS There were a large number of grass fires in city and suburban districts during the week-end, and fire brigades were kept busy. Little damage was done, the fires being extinguished quickly with wet sacks. About 3 p.m. on Saturday, the City brigade extinguished a grass fire that was threatening the Grafton Flats in Park Road. Yesterday afternoon, a fire in Herne Bay was put out with little trouble. The Point Chevalier brigade was called out to a small blaze on a vacant section near Western Springs on Saturday, little trouble being experienced. Three grass fires, one in Green Lane, another in St. Mark’s Road and one in Benson Road, were attended to by the Remuera brigade during Saturday afternoon and evening. A grass fire on a neighbouring section endangered the Manual Training School buildings in Seccombe’s Road, Newmarket, about 2.30 p.m. on Saturday last. The Newmarket brigade soon suppressed the blaze. At 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon, the brigade was again called to a fire in the same road. A patch of toi-toi bush in Alexander Street, Devonport, was destroyed by a blaze a little, after 3 p.m. on Saturday. The brigade prevented the flames from spreading.
