FIRE IN CHRISTCHURCH

OLD HOTEL DAMAGED GOOD SAVE BY BRIGADE Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. Friday. An outbreak of fire in the A 1 Hott-I at the corner of Cashel and Colombo Streets, In the heart of the city's business area shortly before five o'clock this evening was prevented from seriously endangering the valuable premises adjoining by the prompt action cf the fire brigade. The fire started in the roof, apparently being caused by a spark from a neighbouring chimney. The two-storeyed building is old and constructed of wood and the flames quickly spread, bat the brigade succeed in confining the fire to the roof and only two rooms were damaged It is estimated that the damage amounts to about £SO. Beath and Co., drapers, whose premises adjoin the hotel, are the owners of the building, which is insured for £7,000 in the Northern and Phoenix Offices. The licensee is Mr. Thomas Quirk.
