THE SCRUB BULL

NEW ZEALAND’S QUOTA JERSEYS LEAD PUREBREDS Less than 20 per cent, of the bulls in New Zealand of two years old and over have a pedigree worth talking about. In other words, they belong to the “scrub” class, which serves to lower the quality of our herds. New Zealand, it appears, is well behind many other parts of the world in the war against the “scrub bull.” Latest advices show that there are 58,636 bulls in New Zealand aged two years and over, and that of these only 10,871 are purebred. More than half the purebreds are Jerseys and onetliird of the balance are Friesians. The

In West Australia, South Australia and Tasmania every bull over the age of six months must be registered at a fee of 10s. Registration may be refused if the bull does not come up to the standard adopted unless the Appeal Board- provided directs the registration. In Tasmania it is proposed, after a few years, to disallow grade bulls and permit the use of purebreds only. Ireland is now considering a similar step and the Free State Government is being asked to introduce legislation for the registration of all bulls which must be from dams with certified milk records. Care of the Breeding Sow.—Many a good litter jf pigs has been handicapped from the start because their owner did not have things ready when they came. Neglect at this time is lust like taking money out of one pocket and putting it another pocket with a hole in it.
